Food Selection Manifesto

Ok…now that we’ve all read the last blog post (hint hint – go back HERE and read it if you haven’t already), we’re all on the same page. Let’s talk about food selection…

In no particular order, without a doubt, the best foods to eat are Snickers candy bars, pizza, fettuccini alfredo, and donuts (Krispy Kremes to be exact).

Hahaha don’t we all wish! Well actually those foods would be best if we were making a run for the Sumo wrestling championships. But do we want to do that? NO!

(Hopefully you answered that correctly…if not, this site might be better for you).

Ok, we’ve weeded out the sumos – now that we’re left with the people that want to get lean, let’s go over the main types of foods we should be eating. This isn’t an exhaustive list by any means, but includes most of the foods I eat on a typcial fat-loss diet. (Note: I try not to say “weight loss” diet because that’s too non-descriptive).

We won’t talk about what we shouldn’t be eating – there’s just way too many things. As a general guideline though, if it’s man made, don’t eat it.

Proteins
(organic, free-range, grass-fed is best for meats, wild for fish)
Lean ground beef or turkey breast — Make sure it’s at least 90%+
Lean red meat — Round cuts are generally pretty lean
Fish (White fish, shrimp, etc.) — Be careful with salmon – great fish but very calorie rich.
Protein powder — Not a food but an integral supplement if you don’t eat enough protein
Chicken breast — No comment necessary
Cockroaches — Just seeing if you’re paying attention
Eggs — I usually do a 1:1 ratio of whole to whites

Carbohydrates
Oatmeal — Very versatile, prob. my favorite all-around carb
Vegetables — Broccoli, asparagus; be careful with carrots (not really a “true” carb in my book)
Sweet potatoes — Yummy!
White potatoes — In moderation
Rice — Brown is better, but white isn’t the end of the world

Fats
Nuts — Cashews, almonds, macadamia nuts
Oils — Extra virgin olive oil, macadamia nut oil, flaxseed oil
Natural almond and peanut butter — In moderation

Ok there’s the summary list. If you have a question about a specific food, post it, and I’ll do my best to give you an answer.

The great thing that we haven’t talked about yet, is that those foods are basically the same ones we’re going to want to eat to gain muscle too! How cool is that!? All that we need to do for the most part is change their quantities. We’ll talk about mass-building diets sometime in the future, but at least you’ll be able to take what you’ve learned now about getting lean over into getting big too! It’s a 2-for-1 special! Sweet!!!

Until next time…No Krispys!
